Part of the furniture Posts: 1457 Wed, 28 Nov, 2007 6:27 PM Insane&Proud	Just for a quick aside - I'm fairly sure a BPD dx cannot be given to someone till they are in their twenties as too many of the symptoms are similar to things that a "normal" teenager might do - I'm not saying the label might not be given to people but that officially,a ccording to DSM IV, that cannot be diagnosed at such a young age anyway, as for my views on the question If the diagnosis is an accurate reflection of whats going on then give it, if you child really is bipolar wouldn't you want to know and wouldn't help the doctors psych understand how to treat it To be honest (and this completely my own opinion) I don't see why diagnosing "young people" should be different from diagnosing non-"young people". Labels are bad but knowing what is wrong with you can be helpfull, it is just that it is hard to untangle the two I have been depressed (at best and mad as a hatter at worst) since I can remember but not told anything was wrong till I was 16, perhaps if I'd been told earlier (or more to the point my parents) then I could have got help earlier and my life may not have been quite so @#%$ at that time I don't see why if a young child has, say, schizophrenia (as much as it might be sad to think it happens, it does) they should not be diagnosed just because they are young I hope that didn't come accross defensive, the whole label/diagnosis issue is one close to my heart for many, many reasons Jay

With more and more labels, we are creating more and more problems with diagnosing. I think the diagnoses should be underlying and the symptoms talked about and treated foremost. It can be helpful in a 'general' sense for some people who fit these diagnoses almost to the book, but that, I think is becoming less and less as society has more and more complex problems and issues to deal with. Part of the furniture Posts: 600 Fri, 9 Jan, 2009 5:25 AM Permanently Sorry, Lost in a Random World.	i have very mixed views on this... having been given diagnoses at 17... on one hand i think its an ok idea (if theres been a long period of observation) because it can help the young person and the parents to know what theyre dealing with. i found personally that i was releived to know that there was really something wrong with me - i wasnt just a freak on the other hand though... i have since been told by my adult psychiatrist that she doesnt think that those diagnoses are right, and she has put a different label on me... i still think its good to know what your dealing with, but i feel at the same time that theyve stuck a tattoo on my forehead and that people see me as an illness - not a person affected by an illness, and also that theyre saying itll never get better in a way. back to what i was saying... idve thought that the first diagnoses would be right as they observed me for 18 months before they said anything (compared to my current adult psych having seen me for 1 month when this was said), but then again i was 16/17, so i wasnt fully developed. i personally find that symptoms for illnesses are different - not sure, but i think the DSM criteria are different for adolescents and adults, certainly the syptoms can be different. i also think that as people arent fully developed, mentally or physically, its not a good thing... so yea...

Part of the furniture Posts: 15405 Tue, 13 Jan, 2009 12:53 AM Evergreen	I think that too many conditions overlap each other to sometimes give a definite diagnosis, although obviously in some cases, one thing may be prominent. Im thinking of Chris with his OCD. Although he had anxiety and panic attacks, resulting in depression, the classic symptoms of OCD were always there from when he was about 12ish. That was the diagnosis he was given eventually. I do think that probably about 15 is when a lot of youngsters develop their mental health problems, but given a diagnosis then, (which may well be right), it can then progress into another full blown condition, so the diagnosis may well be changed. I agree its almost too complex to come to an absolute conclusion, whatever the age!!!
